TUMA Facility
Metro Youth Football Association had approached the City of Cedar Rapids and the Cedar Rapids Parks & Recreation Department regarding use of park ground for additional football fields in 2010-2012. MYFA considered flood zone property in the Time Check neighborhood of NW Cedar Rapids. Many roadblocks stalled out that process and MYFA went back to the City with a request for temporary use of fields for our tackle program. A one year relationship with Eastern Iowa Sports Zone in Hiawatha using a soccer field in 2012 did not live up to expectations but, did prove additional playing fields were needed.

The Cedar Rapids Parks & Recreation Department proposed to MYFA the use of extra land at the Tuma Soccer Complex in far north Cedar Rapids in the fall 2012. After inspection of the property, the proposed land had potential, but was not ready for play. MYFA hired Schnoor-Bonifazi Engineering & Surveying to survey the property. MYFA interviewed several contractors with experience in constructing regulation football fields to understand the expense of construction. The MYFA Executive Board in February 2013 approved a capital budget of $100,000 to pay the pre-construction survey work, construction of (2) regulation “crowned” football fields, special athletic turf seed, goal posts, scoreboards and miscellaneous equipment. Cedar Rapids Parks & Recreation Department agreed to pay for the in-ground irrigation system for both fields, the herbicide / pesticide and fertilizer. CJ Moyna & Sons, Inc constructed the fields and Fleming Landscape & Irrigation installed the irrigation system.

Construction of the (2) fields started in late April 2013, the sports turf seed was drilled in late June 2013. The goal posts and scoreboards were installed in August 2014. Ribbon cutting ceremony and opening day youth tackle football games are September 7, 2014. MYFA and the City of Cedar Rapids have agreed on a long term lease as the primary user of the fields. The Parks & Recreation department will maintain the fields.

This is a true partnership with the City of Cedar Rapids mutually benefitting both organizations. Special thanks to City of Cedar Rapids Mayor Ron Corbett and City Council, City Manager Jeff Pomeranz and Cedar Rapids Parks & Recreation Department leadership Julie Sina, Sven Leff and Daniel Gibbons.
