So you want to be Tackle Coach?

Safety is Our #1 GOAL!

MYFA Implements a Nationwide Back Ground Check Performed by The National Center for Safety Initiatives For ALL Prospective Flag and Tackle Coaches

This process is funded by MYFA and must be completed by the coaching applicant/volunteer. Upon completion of this process a Green or Red Light will be issued. Green Light applicants will be considered for involvement with MYFA. Red Light applicants will not be considered for coaching/volunteer positions. Red Light notifications are not "reviewable" by the MYFA Executive Board and are final. If you have questions about this process, additional information is available at

How do I let MYFA know I'm interested in coaching tackle football? Prospective tackle coaches are asked to notify the MYFA VP of Volunteers & Coaches. Once you contact MYFA, you will be provided with the required steps to become a tackle coach.

• A coaches meeting and equipment handout will be set prior to the season.

• A link will be provided to coaches prior to this meeting to begin the background check process.

• Head Coaches and up to four assistant coaches are required to complete and pass the background check (cost for background check is covered by MYFA).

• Head Coaches and all assistant coaches will need to complete and pass the USA Football Level 1 Certification (cost for certifications is covered by MYFA).

• Coaches WILL promote and encourage involvement in MYFA's fund raising activities. Failure to do so may impact future MYFA involvement as a coach.

• Coaches will be asked to read and sign coaches conduct agreement.

What is the time commitment? Tackle coaches are asked to assist with equipment handouts leading up to the start of the season. The dates and times for the equipment handouts are listed in the Calendar.

Before the start of the season, tackle teams are limited to five practices per week which last no longer than two hours. Teams will practice for four weeks (20 practices) prior to the first game. Once game schedules begin, practice time is reduced to three times per week and last no longer than two hours. Games are played on Sunday afternoon and early Sunday evening.

Head coaches and all assistant coaches will need to complete and pass the USA Football Level 1 online certification. This must be completed prior to the start of the season. This online test will take between two and three hours to complete. Upon successful completion of the certification, MYFA will purchase USA Football "Coaches Insurance" for you. Details about the insurance are available at

Head coaches are required and interested assistant coaches are welcome to attend ONE of the MYFA coach's clinics. Clinics are offered free of charge to all tackle coaches and cover rules, procedures, practice plans, and health and safety of players. These meetings are held in the MYFA boardroom and equipment building.

First year head coaches are required and interested assistant coaches are welcome to attend BOTH of the mandatory first year coach's meetings. These two hour small group meetings are especially meant to help our first year coaches 1) manage parents and assistant coaches, 2) understand the MYFA Rules and roster requirements and 3) develop practice plans for the upcoming season. Veteran coaches and MYFA board members will lead these meetings.

How long are the games and how many will we play? Each team is scheduled to play six games consisting of four, eight-minute quarters. Games are approximately 90 minutes and are played on Sunday afternoons and early evenings.

When will I get the game schedule? Game schedules will be completed, published and e-mailed to coaches by the first practice of the season.

What are my responsibilities at the end of the season? Upon the completion of the season, all coaches are asked to turn in the equipment bag, jerseys or equivalent payment and pick up the individual awards for their team at the MYFA boardroom and equipment building.
